Negronis-R-Us

The Negroni is a classic cocktail that boasts a rich history, originating in Italy in the early 20th century. The drink is a simple yet elegant blend of equal parts gin, vermouth (generally a sweet one), and Campari, garnished with an orange slice or twist. Its origins are often attributed to Count Camillo Negroni, a nobleman who frequented the Caffè Casoni in Florence.

In 1919, the Count requested a stronger version of the Americano, a popular pre-dinner cocktail made with Campari, vermouth, and soda water. By substituting gin for soda, the Negroni was born. The new concoction quickly gained popularity among the Italian elite and soon made its way into international cocktail culture. A lovely story, but it is highly disputed across cocktail culture and just like most stories, the origins are best left to the story you prefer. Sam loves the Count Negroni story.

The Negroni embodies a balance of bitterness and sweetness, making it a versatile choice for both novice cocktail drinkers and connoisseurs. There are a range of interpretations, with variations including the Negroni Sbagliato, which substitutes Prosecco for gin, and the Boulevardier, which uses bourbon instead. The Negroni has become one of the most versatile cocktails around.

In 2008, the Negroni gained a new level of recognition when the Negroni Week was established, encouraging bars around the world to serve the cocktail while raising funds for charitable causes. This initiative further solidified its status as a beloved classic within the cocktail community. In 2024, Negroni Week runs from the 16 to 22nd September, and is the reason for this article.

Today, the Negroni remains a timeless choice - and it is one of Chris’ favourites - ensuring that the legacy of Count Negroni lives on in every glass. We use our Australian Pink Gin to make our negronis - check out the recipe here.
